English as a Second Language Tests and Admission COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog

English as a Second Language Tests and Admission COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog First let me say from a personal standpoint that I admire anyone who is able to communicate at a high level in more than one language.   Mastering a second language is certainly a huge achievement.   My wife speaks three languages very well and each time she rapidly transitions from one language to another it makes my head spin.   And she types all three languages well even on an English keyboard with no foreign language characters.   Shes my hero. Half the time when I try to speak a bit of Korean I end up speaking broken Spanish, and when I try to speak Spanish broken Korean comes out.   I am convinced that my Latin American apartment neighbors think I am crazy because half the time when I try to say hello, Korean comes out instead of Spanish. Mastery of English is very important to the Admissions Committee at SIPA due to the rigorous and fast paced nature of our curriculum.   I thought I would provide a bit of insight into how the Admissions Committee views English test reports submitted by applicants that do not speak English as a native language. SIPA will accept three tests that measure the ability to communicate in English:   TOEFL, IELTS, and a test administered at Columbia University called the English Certification Test (this test must be taken on our campus).   Scores can be divided into three categories. Category 1: We cannot offer admission based on the score regardless of how impressive the rest of an application may be. Category 2: We can offer provisional admission (only for the fall cycle).   Candidates offered provisional admission must enroll in a mandatory, three week, intensive English course hosted at SIPA in the summer. Category 3: We can offer unconditional admission. For categories 2 and 3, applicants must of course not only score at high level on the English exam, but must also put together a compelling application in all other regards. We do have minimum scores for admission and they are: TOEFL iBT: 100 TOEFL Computer: 250 TOEFL Paper: 600 IELTS: 7 ECT: 7A We can offer admission to candidates that achieve these scores, the offer will be provisional however if the scores fall within the following range: TOEFL iBT: 100 109 TOEFL Computer: 250 267 TOEFL Paper: 600 633 IELTS: 7 -7.5 ECT: 7A 8A And finally, we can offer unconditional admission to candidates that achieve the following scores: TOEFL iBT: 110 and above TOEFL Computer: 270 and above TOEFL Paper: 637 and above IELTS: 8 and above ECT: 8B or above In all cases scores must be less than two years old.   We do not require official test reports to consider candidates for admission.   Candidates can self report test scores on the application Web site all the way up to the Admission Deadline.   Therefore, if you take a test at a late date, as long as you can log in to the application site prior to the deadline to submit the scores achieved, the scores will be accepted for consideration.   Only candidates that are offered admission will then later be asked to submit official test scores for the permanent academic record. We do recommend that you list our code when taking the TOEFL.   Our TOEFL test code is 2161.

Over the decades, the seven army values have been the rock backbone of the United States army. On the other hand, the values have been the defining aspect of good soldiering as the soldiers and their leaders live by the seven core values. To simplify the vales, they are regarded using the acronym LDRSHIP which represents the values as; Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless, Service, Honor, Integrity and Personal Change (Army Refocuses on Seven Core Value 4). Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Army Value: Integrity" essay for you Create order Being an army officer is a job that one as a soldier must uphold with diligent by both men and women in the army. The basic values are taught in training and reinforced all through their varying training drills as well as through a soldiers military career. This essay discusses integrity, and its relevance in military as one of the core values in the Army. According to me, integrity is of considerable importance to the success of an army officer as well as the entire army troop. Doing what is right, even when no one is keeping watch is what is known as Integrity. In military, integrity is one of the army values. According to Tarcza (77), integrity is regarded as the aspect of an individual being honest as well as having strong moral principles. This is one of the expensive values as integrity demands one to be honest in terms of professional and personal relationships. More so, one need to be trustworthy, which in turn inspires trust among people around someone. Honesty demands one to be responsible for every action he/she undertakes as well as always act professionally. In the military, a soldier is supposed to have integrity and pride so as to serve his country honorably. Once the desire to be honorable is lost, a soldier cannot become a professional as well as prospective leader in the military. Being integrity goes beyond doing the right thing when no individual is watching. Adherences to moral/ethical principles as well as pursuit of undiminished condition are two key aspects that ensure integrity is an essential value for a military officer. Through integrity, strength of character is gained as well as the ability for an individual to learn from self-mistakes and focuses on self-improvement. Being an intrinsically motivated thing, integrity helps an individual toward ethical behavior (Matelski 80). With increased diversity in terms of occupation within the military, integrity, value enables a military officer to succeed in any sector within the forces. I.e., either one is the leader, a soldier in the battle, a mechanic, doctor, engineer or any other field, the soldier is able to perform his work within minimal supervision as a result of self-acquired integrity. According to Matelski (78), success without integrity isnt a genuine success. This is due to the fact that, a person with integrity makes value-based decisions, and not decision focused on personal gain. For soldiers focused to be leaders, whether in their team, in a camp or the overall military leader, integrity is a paramount value for good and an effective leadership. Over the years, the need to maintain integrity has remained quiet a task. Breaching of integrity severely hurts a military soldier overshadowing previous success. Breaches of integrity and the resulting consequences are a bitter reminder of the major role and importance of integrity. In summary, integrity remains an important value for an army officer. However, together with the other 6 values, they are contributing to making of a complete army officer. Being a soldier, integrity is an important value for an army to possess. The Road Not Taken By Robert Frost - 1286 Words

Everyone faces choices in life on a daily basis. You decide what you want to eat in the morning and if you wear pants or shorts that day. Everything is a choice, however, no one can tell how each path will turn out, so saying the road less taken is the better choice has no evidence and is a useless statement. In his poem â€Å"The Road Not Taken,† Robert Frost gives thought about taking the road less traveled and how it has made a difference in his life, however each road is actually equal in taking and both can have positive and negative effects and there is technically no actual â€Å"road less traveled†. The law Is a dynamic thing. We will write a custom essay sample on Morals and ethics essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now Let a complex mechanism evolving from hundreds of years of tradition, culture and values. In general terms, the law can be defined as a set of enforceable rules of conduct with set down guidelines for relationships between people and organisms in a society. Laws change when society does, when a certain law is changed to fit the modern day society, it is a very complicated process in which a law needs to be changed. For example, Australian politician Barry Farrell has changed the law of selling drinks in bars after a certain time. The law states that bars and puns are not allowed to sell drinks after am to reduce people from being injured or even killed. Ethics and morals both relate to â€Å"right† and â€Å"wrong† conduct. Ethics Is set by a series of rules provided to an individual by an external source, egg- their profession. Whereas, morals refer to as an Individual’s own principles regarding right and wrong. Ethics do not change as a person moves from one society to the next. Morals may change as a person moves from one society to the next. Bursas are an important point towards changing the community over time. The Burk is a fully covered outer garment that Islamic traditions wear to cover up their dies, showing only their eyes. The problem regarding the Bursas is that this tradition has been brought into Australia and worn by Muslim women everywhere, and refuse to take it off. This is why a new law is trying to be enforced to make sure Muslim women take off their Bursas when asked or needed too. The legislation was drafted in response to public outcry about the case of Burk-weaning mother-of- seven Carnet Matthews, who had a conviction of knowingly making a false statement quashed. Ms Matthews was originally given a six-month Call sentence after being mound guilty of falsely accusing a senior constable of forcibly trying to remove her Burk when she was pulled over while driving in Woodbine in Kidney’s southwest in June 2010. She was later found innocent on appeal after the prosecution could not prove she was the woman who signed the statement while wearing the garment. This statement is the main reason why Bursas should be taken off when told of. Abortion is also another significant topic in relate to change in the community. The grounds on which abortion is permitted in Australia vary from state to state. In every Tate, abortion is legal to protect the life and health of the woman, though each state has a different definition. There is now law anywhere in Australia that requires the notification or consent of a woman’s sexual partner. There Is also no enforced waiting period or an abortion, except In Western Australia, a minor does not require parental consent or notification. This law Is also very similar to the one about rape. They both are salary In some ways and could not be controlled at sometimes. This law has changed over the last 40 years as back in the sass’s, abortions were illegal in omen being bashed and then raped and getting pregnant, they had to change the law because of this. A woman will have to have the pregnancy and live her whole life knowing how her child was brought into the world. Every time she looks at her child it could remind her of that horrible and unforgettable night. Another reason this law had been dropped was because of several gang rapes around Sydney. There was a number of attacks in a matter of weeks involving a group of guys on a girl in 2000. Eight Lebanese men kept approaching two young girls aged 17 and 18 in a car on August 10th, August 12th, a 16 year old girl was walking through a park when a 17 year old raped her alongside 12 other men and one had even held a gun against her head, August 30th, a woman was told she was being taken to a house to smoke some cannabis, however she was taken to three different houses where she was raped 25 times by 14 different men, two 16 year old girls were taken by attackers at a local train station, where then three older men raped then repeatedly over five hours. This just goes to show how easy it could be to get pregnant after being raped. This tenement is true, this was happening to people because of the policy. In Conclusion, given the evidence, moral and ethics have changed law in modern society for a number of different reasons. The law regarding the Burk is still being questioned and still has many different ways n how to change or stop the law. Abortion has changed due to young women being raped, because of this the government and communities want this horrible thing to stop. Also, people are generally pleased with the law regarding abortion as people do not want to see young teens being forced to have and live with a child. How to cite Morals and ethics essay, Essays

This helps to speed up communication and access to internet services across the world at affordable prices. Advancing to the use of fibre optics in data communication will provide a platform suitable for up to 2.5Gbit/sec of data transfer. Such a platform is expected to support various architectures of communication with examples being layouts such as ring, star, bus and tree configurations. Most of these l ayouts are advantageous since they have higher fault tolerance than those that are in use currently. This therefore means that they will be more effective in terms of transmitting huge amounts of data. Optical fibre will therefore offer a secure data communication channel since it is not possible to tamper with them without detection. This is due to the fact that the power loss that occurs due to tampering cannot go unnoticed (Agrawal, 2002). It has been suggested by many communication experts that optical fibre is very expensive and fragile. It is however expected that the continued manufacture of optical fibre cables will lower the costs and therefore make fibre the cheaper option as compared to copper. In future, packet switching is expected to shape the storage of data due to the fact that the amount of digital data that need storage space today is increasing at a very fast rate and packet switching will offer the solution needed. The recent past has seen an incredible increase in the demand for capacity for the storage of data as a result of increased use of the internet and other related services. It is therefore necessary for data transport networks to evolve in order to meet these needs. Packet switching therefore will be used to provide an optical layer which can be reconfigured with optical cross-connects in order to realise a flexible core with a very high bandwidth capable of supporting the increased capacity. This means that this evolution and ado ption of packet switching will offer the technology industry a circuit switched optical layer which will enable high capacity data storage and transfer as well as fast circuit provisioning (O’Mahony et al., 2002). The increasing multimedia traffic in terms of internet use has also led to the need for the development of packet switching. This is due to the fact that it will help ensure that network resources are used in an economical manner. Packet switching offers very high bandwidth efficiency and therefore plays an important role in making this possible. It has also been envisioned that in future, optical packet router can be used as an edge network device which will be designed to function as an interface to link the optical domain to the electronic ones.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Packet Switching and Fibre Optics in Modern Communication and Data Storage specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This is expected to provide flexibility and efficiency at a lower cost than when using electronic routers (O’Mahony et al., 2002). Conclusion The discussion above has shown that the future of communication and data storage and transfer are expected to change as a result of these two technologies. They will provide the high bandwidth and efficiency required to support the increasing need for internet services and data storage capacity. References Agrawal, G. P. (2002).
